It's hard to believe it, but I have a 5 year-old...who starts kindergarten in the fall!!!
We had Ethan's birthday party the Saturday before his birthday, but I wanted to do a few fun things for him on his actual birthday.
First, we tried a "balloon avalanche" where we strapped balloons against his bedroom door with streamers. So when he opened his door, the balloons would fall in on him as a fun surprise. I wish I had thought to take a video of his reaction. Not at all like I had thought it would go.
The grumpy, confused look on his face was priceless. And then he started crying and saying that he didn't want to be trapped in his room - I guess without all the balloons there, the streamers looked like we trapped him in. So Emeree had to break them away to show him he wasn't trapped. But it took about an hour to get him in a good mood. Either he's just not a morning person, or he was too young to try this on. Maybe if we do it for Emeree's next birthday and let him help us put it up on her door, he will understand the idea a little more and be more excited if we try it on him next year.
I made him a "5" cake - which is the 4th cake I have made in a week and a half - I am cake'd out! I made it by cooking the cake in a 9x13 and then splitting it in half, stacking the 2 halves with frosting in between and cutting out a "5" using a paper stencil I made. I was worried about the cake looking all mangled with that much cutting, but it cut super smooth and easy. It was fun to make a number cake - that may just become a tradition to do on their birthday day.

Laughing at the thought of Ethan having that reaction to the balloon wall! He is such a fun boy, I love his personality. So glad you are documenting all these events. They will LOVE looking back on them.
I miss Ethan! He is such a sweet boy!
Oh my goodness! What a cutie! Love the cake! Can't believe how old our little ones are getting!
